Barcode resellers purchase sections of numbers that are now outside of GS1’s control. They then sell these numbers on to individuals for use on their products. These barcode numbers are generally much cheaper than other barcode numbers as there are no annual fees or joining fees attached to them. Hence, these barcodes are purchased at a one-off cost.
What to watch out for?
When purchasing from a barcode reseller, ensure that they are legitimate and have been in business for a while (i.e. they aren’t going anywhere). There are occasions where people sell cheap non-legitimate barcodes to make a quick buck. This gets expensive for the people they supply to when they have to reprint their product packaging with a new barcode.
