A barcode is a machine-readable representation of a unique number, allowing retailers to track product sales in their inventory system. It typically consists of dark ink on a light background, forming high and low reflectance patterns that are converted to binary digits. UPCs (12 digits) and EANs (13 digits) are common types of barcodes.

GTIN Barcodes

GTIN Barcodes, or Global Trade Item Numbers, is another term for retail barcode. The number following the acronym GTIN refers to the particular type of barcode. i.e. GTIN-12 is a UPC-12 barcode number. As barcodes move from their current linear format to 2D QR codes, the term GTIN will be used more frequently. GTINs will still be needed. The only difference is that they will be encoded as 2D (QR code) rather than the traditional linear barcode we are used to seeing.
