Barcodes Australia: Unlocking Efficiency and Market Access
In today’s fast-moving retail and logistics environment, barcodes in Australia play a vital role in ensuring smooth operations and reliable product identification. Whether you’re selling in physical stores, online marketplaces, or exporting globally, using standardised barcodes is essential for product traceability, inventory control, and retail compliance.
Why Barcodes Matter for Australian Businesses
-
Global Compatibility: Standard product identifiers are recognised worldwide, enabling Australian businesses to enter both local and international markets with confidence.
-
Retailer Requirements: Leading retailers and online platforms such as Coles, Woolworths, eBay, and Amazon require valid barcodes to list and sell products.
-
Efficient Supply Chains: Barcodes enable faster stock processing, real-time tracking, and accurate point-of-sale data capture.
How to Get Barcodes for Your Products
If you’re launching a new product in Australia or scaling your operations, barcodes are a must. Here’s how to get started:
-
Register for Unique Product Numbers: Choose a trusted provider of globally accepted barcodes. Look for ones that issue genuine Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs).
-
Choose the Right Barcode Type: Common types include EAN-13 and UPC for retail, and ITF-14 or GS1-128 for bulk packaging and logistics.
-
Create and Apply Your Barcode: Once you receive your numbers, generate barcode images using a reliable barcode generator and apply them to your product packaging.
Benefits of Using Valid Barcodes
-
Retail Acceptance: Avoid product rejections by ensuring your barcodes meet international standards.
-
Inventory Accuracy: Improve stock visibility and reduce human error across your supply chain.
-

What barcodes are used in Australia
The vast majority of retail products in Australia use EAN-13 barcodes. These are standard 13-digit retail barcodes for use on all products except books and magazines. Some people may also use UPC-A Barcodes. However, these are primarily used in the USA and Canada.
Australia Barcode requirements
There are a few restrictions on our barcodes in Australia. Some stores require verification reports (which we can arrange), whereas others (although very few) only accept barcodes from GS1 Australia. Please see barcode acceptance for more details.
